Start the program and follow the instructions below.

The first thing you'll have to do is to click on the file menu and choose "New".
Continue to the method that you want to use to create the graph:

  • Creating a graph from scratch
  • Creating a graph from your own chronological lists
  • Creating a graph from the lists in the Marvel Chronology Project
  • Creating a graph from scratch
1.Add one or more comics to the graph:
Click on the edit menu. Choose "New comic/s...". Every line you write in the dialog that appears will become a new comic. Press OK.
Move the mouse over the graph area. You will see the comics moving with it. Left click where you want to place the comics. Right click to cancel.
2."Keep layout" should be checked. That keeps the comics in place when you create the figures.
    3.Create a figure:
Click on the edit menu. Choose "New figure...". Write the figures name in the dialog that appears. Press OK.
4.Add the figure to a comic. There are two ways to do this:
aThe graph can be in two modes: Chronology and Layout. Now it need to be in chronology mode. Either click on Chronology under the menus or click on the graph menu and choose "Chronology".
Right click in the graph and choose "Add" in the menu that appears. Right click again and choose "Activate all". This makes the figure active, which means that it will be added to the comics that you now left click on. You can see if it worked by right clicking on the comic. In the dialog that appears you should see the figures name left to the remove button.
bNow you can remove the figure from the comic by pressing "remove". And then add it again by pressing the add button. Press OK
Note:You can also activate the figures by right clicking on them in the key area and choose "Active" in the menu that appears. Or the third and last method. Put the key in "active mode" by clicking on "Active" above the key. Mark the figures that you want active.

Creating a graph from your own chronological lists
1.There are three ways to add a chronological list:
aClick on the edit menu. Choose "New figure...". If "Preview" is checked a dialog will appear. Paste the figures chronological list in the textarea. Press OK.
bClick on the edit menu. Choose "Add from file...". Choose the text file that contains the chronological list. Press OK. If "Preview" is checked you'll get a chance to edit the list before it gets added to the graph.
cClick on the edit menu. Choose "Add from directory...". Choose the directory where your chronological lists are located. Press OK. Now the program will add all the text files in that directory. If "Preview" is checked you'll get a chance to edit or cancel the lists.
Note:If your lists contains a chronological contradiction you will be notified with a dialog. If that happens the program will only present the part of the graph where the contradiction is located. It will be like a circle where if you follow the chronology you will get to the beginning all the time. You will have to get rid of all contradictions. This is done by splitting one or more comics by clicking on them. It takes some training to see where the problem lies in the graph. A way to make it easier is to give all figures their own line. This is done by clicking on the key menu and choose "Number group/s". Press OK in the dialog that appears. Another way to make it easier is to add one figure at a time. If a contradiction appears you know that it has something to do with the last list you added.

Creating a graph from the lists in the Marvel Chronology Project
1.The most simple way is to go to the MCP and copy the list and then paste it into a text file and then add it to the graph with the method described above. But with the program you can search the MCP files and then add the list directly. To be able to do this you will have to have the files from MCP saved on your hard drive. You can download them yourself, but to be sure that you get all the needed files you should let the program do it. That is made by clicking on the edit menu and choosing "Update MCP-files...". The files will be saved in the directory that you can specify by clicking on the edit menu and choosing "Change path to MCP-files...". You will need to specify the path after everytime you download the files so that the program makes the necessary updates. Now you should be able to go to step two.
2.Click on the edit menu and choose "Add from MCP...". A dialog will appear. Write some letters in the textfield right to the "search button" in the figures name that you want to add to the graph. The program searches the MCP while you are writing.
3.Choose the figure you are looking for in the menu right to the "Found button". Press the "Found button" and choose "add" from the menu that appears.
4.The figure will now appear in the menu right to the "Added button". Press the "Added button" and choose "Add to graph". If "Preview" is checked a dialog will appear where you can see the figures chronological list before it is added to the graph.
Note:In the begin/end textfields you can write the comics that you want the figures list to begin/end with. I recommened that you don't add the complete list for figures with very long lists. It works fine if you only are going to add a couple of figures to the graph. But the program can't handle extremly large graphs. It's some kind of limitation in Java that makes the program stop if it does too many recursive calls. (It's good if you've done a mistake in the code that will make the program go on forever though).
Another reason to not make the graph too big is chronological contradictions. See note above.

See the documentation for descriptions on all the functions in the program.
